A Typical Day at V.T.B.S

It may be noted that students attend the activities of their choice. Their time is their own. The day begins at 8:00 a.m. with Prayers (a devotion). Breakfast is followed by a break or Biblical language studies. The first lecture is next, followed by "coffee". The second lecture precedes lunch. There is a long break, then "tea", then the afternoon lecture. Dinner is followed by a break and the language reading. The day ends at 9:15 p.m. with Prayers.

Sight Seeing

Thursday and Friday afternoons are left open for sight seeing. Throughout Oxford there are opportunities for concerts, plays (Shakespearian and others) and historical sights. A person can walk from campus to town, other "colleges" of Oxford University, pubs, haunts of the great writers, or to a church of most any flavor.

Busses run right outside the college gate for excursions across town or to other sights further afield such as Blenheim Castle, birth place of Winston Churchill. Boats are available within walking distance to go "punting".

History engulfs Oxford. The British people are proud of their long history, but are friendly and helpful to their colonial offspring.

Housing

In order to keep costs low, V.T.B.S. students stay in St. Anne College dormitories, not plush, but adequate. Private bathrooms and showers are "down the hall". Lavatories are provided in the room. Most rooms are single occupancy. A few double rooms are available for couples who register early. Other couples simply take two separate rooms and rearrange the furniture, making one a bedroom and the other a study/ visiting center.

A British Experience

The participants are British. They come from all over the British Isles, have different accents, come from different home, political educational and religious backgrounds. A person can experience Wales, Yorkshire, the Isles of Man and Wight just by taking part in enjoyable table conversation. The students are knowledgeable of the Bible, some by extensive formal study; some are basically self-taught. They are open and kind. Ages range from twenty to eighty. Many have attended for over three decades.

Before 1996 only two U.S. citizens took advantage of the program. In 1996 there were four, in 1997, seven. Now V.T.B.S. is opening its arms and inviting you.

Experience British food and fellowship. Not only will you have wide choice of breakfast foods (everything from kippers to high-fiber cereal) and be served wonderful lunch and dinner meals family style, but you will also enjoy morning "coffee" with a choice of treats and a similar afternoon "tea". Some evenings you will likely be invited to attend a "sherry party" in a dorm room. You can learn to eat with a knife in your right hand and fork in your left, a very practical experience. Vegetarian meals are available.

Stimulating Conversation. At the table, at tea or coffee, in the dorm, or sight-seeing, the conversation is stimulating. The British students are educated, have definite opinions and ideas, and that unique British dry wit.
